About Chaplygin
Chaplygin is a town and the managerial focal point of Chaplyginsky District in Lipetsk Oblast, Russia, situated at the conjunction of the Stanovaya Ryasa and Yagodnaya Ryasa Rivers, 85 kilometers north of Lipetsk, the authoritative focus of the oblast. The settlement of Ust Stanovykh Ryas was established on the region of present day Chaplygin in the principal half of the 17th century. It later developed into the town selo of Slobodskoye.
In 1695, Peter the Great constructed a little wooden royal residence in the region, and in 1702 a little fortification under the name of Oraniyenburg. The name, initially taken from that of the German town Oranienburg, was changed to Raninburg and later to Ranenburg. Town status was conceded to Ranenburg in 1778. In 1948, it was renamed Chaplygin after the Russian physicist Sergey Chaplygin, who was conceived here in 1869. Inside the structure of managerial divisions, Chaplygin fills in as the regulatory focal point of Chaplyginsky District. As an authoritative division, it is fused inside Chaplyginsky District as Chaplygin Town Under District Jurisdiction.
