About Birobidzhan
Birobidzhan is a town and the authoritative focus of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Russia, situated on the Trans-Siberian Railway, near the fringe with China. As of the 2010 Census, its populace was 75,413. Birobidzhan is named after the two biggest waterways in the self-ruling oblast: the Bira and the Bidzhan, albeit just the Bira, which misleads the east of the Bidzhan Valley, flows through the town. The two waterways are tributaries of the Amur.
The city was arranged by the Swiss modeler Hannes Meyer, and built up in 1931. It turned into the regulatory focus of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in 1934 and town status was conceded to it in 1937. Yiddish essayist David Bergelson had a huge impact in advancing Birobidzhan, in spite of the fact that he himself did not by any stretch of the imagination live there. Bergelson composed articles in the Yiddish dialect daily papers in different nations lauding the district as a perfect getaway from hostile to Semitism somewhere else.
No less than 1,000 families from the United States and Latin America came to Birobidzhan in view of Bergelson. However, Jews were by and by focused in the wake of World War II when Joseph Stalin left on a battle against ‘rootless cosmopolitans’ a code name for Jews.Nearly all the Yiddish foundations of Birobidzhan were liquidated. Amongst those executed was David Bergelson, Birobidzhan's initial advertiser, who was killed in 1952 on his 68th birthday celebration.
