About Victoriei Square in Timisoara
Victoriei Square, formerly Opera Square, is one of the central squares of Timisoara, the place where Timisoara was proclaimed on December 20, 1989, the first free city in Romania. On the opposite poles of the market are the Opera North, and the Metropolitan Cathedral at the South. From the Opera to the Cathedral, the promenade on the right is called "Corso" and the one on the left "Surogat". Both have architectural ensembles of historical importance.
Around the market are important institutions such as the Romanian Opera House, the National Theater, the Hungarian State Theater, the German State Theater, the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, the Timis Cinemas, the Capitol and the Studio, the Banat Museum, Art Galleries and many shops. "Corso" is the name of the promenade that starts from the Opera to the Cathedral on the right.
In the past, this was the place of the high-rise Timisoara high society, well-lit, with luxury restaurants and shops. "Underground" is the opposite promenade, on the left side, and direct continuation of Alba Iulia street. In the past, only young people and workers walked here. Students had access only with the permission of the school, and the soldiers had to prove they were on leave to walk here.
