About Vacaresti
Vacaresti is a neighbourhood in south-eastern Bucharest, placed close to Dambovita River and the Vacaresti Lake. Nearby neighbourhoods include Vitan, Oltenitei, and Berceni. Originally a village, it turned into incorporated into Bucharest as it increased. Its name is related to the Wallachian aristocratic Vacarescu family, with an etymology main again to the Romanian vacar, "cow-herder," and the suffix -esti. In the 19th century, many Jewish immigrants settled in Vacaresti, maximum of them coming from Imperial Russia.
Vacaresti and Dudesti had been the regions where the poorest Jews settled. On 21 January 1941, the fascist Iron Guard began its coup against Ion Antonescu, with whom that they had shared government strength due to the fact that September. The Iron Guard legionnaires killed 125 Jews, which includes in Vacaresti and Dudesti. On 24 January 1941 Ion Antonescu suppressed the riot and the Iron Guard become banned and the individuals arrested.
