The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Timisoara and Metropolis of Banat. It is devoted to the Three Holy Hierarchs, Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom.

The building's style architect Ioan Traianescu is Neo-Moldavian style, based totally on Romanian Orthodox, overdue Renaissance, Ottoman, and Byzantine architecture factors, such as niches underneath the eaves, ribbed star vaulting within the interior, and lacquered discs in a variety of colors. The church's interior and exterior paintings were created by means of the painter Anastase Demian. The tough duration that accompanied the shape's crowning glory, that of Romania throughout World War II, avoided the art work from being finished with the constructing.
