About Targoviste
Targoviste is a city in Romania, and the county seat of the Dambovita County. It is located at the right bank of the Ialomita. At the 2011 census Targoviste had a population of 79,610, making it the twenty sixth largest metropolis in Romania. One of the most essential cities in the history of Wallachia, it became its capital between the early 15th century and the 16th century.
The place of Targoviste which became first inhabited is located where the Saint Nicholas-Geartoglu Church and Stelea Veche Church stand nowadays. It was on this location that the first fortifications have been built: a small stone constructing surrounded by way of a brick wall and a moat, likely belonging to a neighborhood ruler. However, archaeological proof is scarce and it is hard to pinpoint exactly when it turned into erected. The name Targoviste is a Slavic name which the town acquired inside the Middle Ages. It is derived from the Old Bulgarian word for market, referring to the area rather than the market itself, which would possibly suggest that the market might also have at one time been quickly interrupted
