About Sulina
Sulina is a city and unfastened port in Tulcea County, Romania, at the mouth of the Sulina department of the Danube. It is the easternmost factor of Romania. During the mid-Byzantine duration Sulina turned into a small cove and within the 14th century a Genoese port inhabited through a handful of sailors, pirates and fishermen. In the 18th century the Ottomans built a lighthouse there as a way to facilitate communique among Constantinople and the Danubian Principalities, the principle breadbaskets for the Ottoman capital.
Thanks to the signing of the Treaty of Adrianoupolis, September 2, 1829, that unfettered the Danube grain trade, Sulina, by using then below Russian control, have become crucial. Great sailing boats couldn't sail fully loaded to Braila and Galaţi, which had been the main export centres of Wallachia and Moldavia, due to the shallow waters of the river; consequently, they had to tranship at the least part of their cargoes to smaller riverboats. The owners and crew of those sleps have been nearly usually Greek.
