About Sanpaul
Sanpaul is the village of the commune with the equal name in Mures County, Transylvania, Romania. Sanpaul village is documented in 1332 with Sancta Paulo. In Sanpaul occurred the conflict of July 1575 between Gaspar Bekes, pretender at the crown of the Principality of Transylvania and prince Stephen Bathory.
Although Bekes had the support of the reformed Szeklers, disillusioned with Bathoresti's recalculation coverage, the prince's forces defeated. Bekes had to go away Transylvania, giving up other claims to the Principality, at the same time as the Szeklers had lost the privileges they had previously loved. At the 2002 census there had been 1,640 inhabitants, of which 685 had been Gypsies 41.8%, 494 Hungarians 30.1%, 459 Romanians 28%, Germans and Ukrainians. The plot of the Romanian Heroes of the Second World War is placed in the old cemetery of the locality and has an area of a hundred and ten square. In this plot are buried 31 Romanian heroes.
