About Rupea Citadel
Rupea Citadel is one of the oldest archaeological websites in Romania, the first signs and symptoms of human settlements relationship from the Paleolithic and early Neolithic. The first documentary attestation dates from 1324 whilst the Saxons revolted towards King Charles I of Hungary and took safe haven in the fort. According to archaeologists, the present day fort became constructed at the ruins of a former Dacian protection castle conquered through the Romans. The call of the citadel comes from Latin rupes that means "stone". From the 10th century, the fortress skilled a systematic growth, in order that in the 14th century it had a key strategic function, being the main linking point among Transylvania, Moldavia and Wallachia.
