The first known reference to the metropolis became in a papal sign in of duties in 1334 while it became cited via its Hungarian name, a sacerdos de Oduorhel. Since 1615, while Gabriel Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania, reaffirmed the rights of the city,
the place has been called Székelyudvarhely. Udvarhely become the region of the primary meeting of Székelys in 1357. A fort became built within the metropolis in 1451.
