Maramures

Maramures is a geographical, historical and cultural location in northern Romania and western Ukraine. It is located at the northeastern Carpathians, alongside the top Tisa River; it covers the Maramureș Depression and the encompassing Carpathian mountains. Alternatively, the time period Maramures is also used for the Maramureș County of Romania, which includes the southern section of the historical place. In historical times, this area turned into settled by using Celts, Dacians, Sarmatians and Germanic peoples. In the first century BC, it became a part of the Dacian Kingdom underneath Burebista, at the same time as inside the early Middle Ages, it become dominated by using the Hunnic Empire, the Kingdom of the Gepids, the Kingdom of the Avars, the White Croatia and the Kievan Rus.

The territory become part of the Kingdom of Hungary from the 11th century and become nominally divided between the Gyepű border location, comitatus of Szatmár and comitatus of Borsova. Later, the complete vicinity was covered into the comitatus of Máramaros. Initially, the inhabitants of the area were allowed to hold their native political company, the Voevodates, which formed many small self sustaining regions. The King long struggled to persuade the Voivodes to simply accept the title of Count, with the implied losing independence in political and monetary subjects.
