About Ileanda
Ileanda is a commune positioned in Salaj County, Romania. In the 1830s, Jews started out to reach in Ileanda, and by the end of the century, the network ran almost all trade and small enterprise within the village and its surroundings. In the interwar period, there was a yeshiva with 30 to forty college students, at the same time as Zionist activity began in the 1920s.
In 1930, there have been 308 Jews or 26% of the population. In June 1942, eleven Jews have been drafted into hard work battalions in Reichskommissariat Ukraine, of whom survived. In May 1944, 900 Jews were despatched via the authorities of the Kingdom of Hungary to the Dej ghetto after which to the Auschwitz attention camp. Jozsef Paneth, who have become the local rabbi in 1926, escaped deportation to Romania with his family. Following World War II, he served the surviving Jews until the network dispersed in 1950.
