About Calafat
Calafat is a metropolis in Dolj County, southern Romania, inside the place of Oltenia. It lies at the river Danube, opposite the Bulgarian town of Vidin, to which it is connected via the Calafat-Vidin Bridge, opened in 2013. After the destruction of the bridges of overdue antiquity, for centuries Calafat become linked with the southern financial institution of the Danube by way of boat and afterward by ferryboat. The town administers 3 villages: Basarabi, Ciupercenii Vechi and Golenți. It become based inside the 14th century with the aid of Genoese colonists, who employed massive numbers of workmen in repairing ships.
This industry gave the town its name. In January 1854, all through the Crimean War, when Russian forces were headed up the Danube, Ahmed Pasha, commanding the Turkish forces at Calafat, made a surprise assault on the brief Russian garrison close by Cetate, which changed into beneath the command of Colonel Alexander Baumgarten. This diverted the initial Russian attack and allowed Ahmed Pasha to consolidate his forces in Calafat. On 28 January the Russians below the command of General Iosif Romanovich Anrep reached Calafat and began the siege which lasted till May. Riddled with the aid of sickness and not able to take the city, Anrep withdrew.
