About Balvanyos Castle
Balvanyos Castle is a castle break of national monument fame, positioned within the north of Covasna county. As a Romanian countrywide monument, its code is CV-II-m-A-13297. Balvanyos in Hungarian manner idolatrous, so the name of the castle can be loosely translated into the Castle with of the Idols. According to folklore, tribal chieftain Opour constructed the fort for the duration of the rule of king Stephen I, with the intention to be able to maintain practising his pagan faith in peace.
Written sources point out the fort from the twelfth century onward, first beneath the name Baluanus, and later, in 1360, as Castrum Balwanus. The fort had an ovoid-formed wall, and on its northern give up a quadrangular tower with cisterns underneath it. The fort turned into fortified with both an outer and an internal wall. According to neighborhood folklore, this changed into the region in which Otto of Bavaria, topped King of Hungary, lost his crown to Kan Laszlo in 1307.
