About Olsztyn Castle
Castle of Warmian Bishops in Olsztyn is a fortress constructed inside the 14th century in the Gothic architectural style. The fort had the role of being the administration headquarters for the Bishops of Warmia. The most well known administrator changed into Nicolaus Copernicus among 1516 and 1521. The biggest expository room is the refectory with a diamond vault built around 1520. Currently, the fortress houses the Museum of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The citadel changed into constructed between 1346 and 1353 made up of one wing to the north east of the courtyard. The fort turned into surrounded via a line of fortifications and a ditch which lead to the Lyna River with a bascule bridge.
The south east wing of the fortress was constructed within the 15th century. The tower from the 14th century, become located within the eastern corner of the courtyard and reconstructed inside the early 16th century, giving the fortress a circular appearance in a rectangular formation the tower having 40 meters in height. During the reconstruction of the tower, the citadel's fortifications had been raised to 12 meters in peak. By this, the castle became a chief bastion placed at the borders of Olsztyn, securing its front.
