About Jedrzejow
Jedrzejow is a town in Poland, situated in the Swietokrzyskie Voivodeship, around 35 kilometers southwest of Kielce. It is the capital of Jedrzejow County. It has 16,139 occupants. The starting point of the name of the town is obscure. Most likely it was named after a man named Andrzej, an individual from the respectable Lis family, which lived here. In the early long stretches of the Kingdom of Poland, a settlement of Brzeznica existed in the area of Jedrzejow.
It was first referenced in the year 1153, in an archive issued by Archbishop of Gniezno, Janik. In the archive, establishment of a Cistercian religious community referred to today as the Blessed Wincenty Kadlubek Church. The cloister was established by French Cistercians, who came to Jedrzejow from Morimond Abbey somewhere in the range of 1143 and 1153. The area of the religious community, which was the town of Brzeznica, was spelled Brysinch. In the twelfth century, the name of the town was changed into Jedrzejow, yet one of the nearby waterways still bears the name Brzeznica.
