About Daraga Church
Nuestra Senora de la Porteria Parish Church, usually known as Daraga Church, is a Roman Catholic Church in the municipality of Daraga, Albay, Philippines underneath the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Legazpi. The church was built via the Franciscans in 1772 below the patronage of the Our Lady of the Gate. Certain church sections were d as a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines in 2007.
Daraga was set up as a settlement by using people moving from Cagsawa, who feared any other eruption of the Mayon Volcano in that location. They asked permission from the Spanish authorities to set up a brand new community and church south of Cagsawa. Their request become granted by using Governor-General Simon de Salazar via a communique to the Alcade-mayor of the province of Camarines, dated June 12, 1772. The gift church of Daraga changed into constructed under the Franciscan monks in 1773. Built at the time that Daraga become a visita of Cagsawa, the church turned into erected atop a hill in barangay Santa Maria overlooking the Mayon Volcano.
