Vestby

Vestby is a municipality in Akershus county, Norway. It is a part of the Follo conventional vicinity. The municipality firstly the parish is known as after the vintage Vestby farm, because the first church became built right here. The first element is vestr which means that "west" and the ultimate element is byr which means "farm". The neighbouring farms have the names Ostby "jap farm", Sunnby "southern farm", and Nordby "northern farm"; and they should all four be the components of a bigger and older farm, whose name is now unknown.

Archaeological studies in Holen has showed that the vicinity has been populated due to the fact approximately 2400 BC. There are various archeological finds inside the place, including the ones from the Bronze Age. Many Norwegian emigrants went to America all through the 1840s and later settled within the region of the present city of Westby, Wisconsin named after preferred store proprietor and American Civil War Union soldier Ole T. Westby; a city which nonetheless has a typically Norwegian American populace. Holen have become known for the production of wood.

It became a lading region in the 17th century. From the Renaissance till the 18th century, Son was an important harbour. On some Dutch maps from that point, the Oslofjord is referred to as Zoon Water. Vestby was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838. The municipality and lading area of Holen become merged with Vestby on 1 July 1943. The municipality and lading location of Son become merged with Vestby on 1 January 1964.
