About Maihaugen

Maihaugen is one of the maximum visited traveller sights in Lillehammer, Norway. Maihaugen, with near 200 buildings, is one in every of Northern Europe's largest open-air museums and is one among the biggest cultural centers in Norway. The founder, Anders Sandvig, gathered from vintage houses and farmyards within Gudbrandsdalen to offer a sample of Norwegian culture and history in a museum. He first started in his outside, but while his series grew, in 1901, the metropolis council offered him a permanent site for the museum.

In 1904, the metropolis of Lillehammer set aside a place already referred to as Maihaugen and purchased Sandvig's series and hooked up the Sandvig Collections, the formal call for Maihaugen. Sandvig turned into at first employed as unpaid curator, however was later appointed the museum's first director. The new website online of the museum have been used as a picnic and meeting place for the townspeople. People had met right here to have fun the Norwegian Constitution Day and to light bonfires for Midsummer eve.
