About Kon-Tiki Museum

The Kon-Tiki Museum is a historical center in the Bygdøy landmass in Oslo, Norway.

It houses vessels and maps from the Kon-Tiki endeavor, and also a library with around 8000 books.

It was opened in a temporary working in 1949. In 1957, the present building—composed by designers F. S. Platou and Otto Torgersen—was opened. In 1978, an expansion of the gallery composed by Torgersen was opened.

The gallery was initially worked to house the Kon-Tiki, a heap of balsa wood of pre-Columbian model that Norwegian traveler Thor Heyerdahl used to cruise from Peru to Polynesia in 1947.

The Kon-Tiki Museum is arranged close to a few different historical centers, including the Fram Museum, the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, the Viking Ship Museum; and the Norwegian Maritime Museum.
