About Karljohansvern

Karjohansvern at Horten turned into the primary base for the Royal Norwegian Navy from 1819 to 1963. In 1818, it became determined to establish a naval base in Horten. It become first referred to as Hortens verft, and later Marinens Hovedveerft until King Oscar I named it Carljohansværn verft in 1854 after his father Karl Johan. The shipyards have been started in 1820 and the first launch, a frigate, become in 1828. On 9 April 1940 at some stage in the German invasion of Norway, a conflict happened within the harbour while the Germans attempted to capture the base.

The naval attack changed into repulsed, however German troops managed to outflank the Norwegians and pressure them to capitulate. Karljohansvern remained in German arms for the relaxation of World War II, whilst the ships running out of it were pressed into their provider. In 1953, the Norwegian Parliament determined the Navy's predominant base must be moved to Bergen. When the new headquarters at Haakonsvern was officially opened in 1963, a number of capabilities were transferred from Karljohansvern. In 1968, the National Government took over the shipyard and renamed it A/S Horten Verft. Which become closed down in 1987? The Officer Candidate School for the Navy remained on website until 2005.
