About Waimarie

The PS Waimarie is a historic riverboat based on the Whanganui River in New Zealand. This paddle steamer turned into constructed as a kitset by Yarrow & Co in London in 1899. Assembled at Wanganui, and named PS Aotea, she started service with the Wanganui Settlers River Steamship Co. In 1892 Alexander Hatrick become contracted through Thomas Cook to carry vacationers to Pipiriki at the paddle-steamer; the journey became "The Rhine of Maoriland" tourist path into the indoors of New Zealand. Hatrick's employer purchased the Aotea in 1902 and she or he turned into renamed Waimarie, a M?ori-language phrase which means "non violent waters".

The Waimarie operated a ordinary service between Wanganui and Pipiriki, sporting cargo, mail and passengers. The starting of the Whanganui River Road in 1935 decreased the call for for river shipping, and the Waimarie, needing her boiler replaced, ceased walking in 1949. In 1952, she sank at her moorings in Wanganui. After being buried inside the river mud for nearly forty years, the Waimarie became salvaged via volunteers in 1993. After a six-year recovery undertaking, the PS Waimarie began traveler cruises on 1 January 2000. During the summer time she operates on the lower stretches of the river, and is likewise available for charter.
