Southland
About Southland
Southland is New Zealand's southernmost vicinity. It is composed especially of the southwestern part of the South Island and Stewart Island / Rakiura. It consists of Southland District, Gore District and the town of Invercargill. The area covers over three.1 million hectares and spans over three, four hundred km of coast. The earliest inhabitants of Murihiku had been Māori of the Waitaha iwi, accompanied later via Kati Māmoe and Kai Tahu. In later years, the shoreline become a scene of early extended touch between Europeans and Maori, in this case sealers, whalers and missionaries together with Wohlers at Ruapuke Island.
In 1853, Walter Mantell bought Murihiku from local Māori iwi, claiming the land for European agreement. Over successive a long time, present-day Southland and Otago have been settled by using large numbers of Scottish settlers. Immigration to New Zealand have been brought about with the aid of an economic melancholy in Scotland and a schism among the Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland
