Kakepuku
About Kakepuku
Kakepuku raises from the apparent between the Waipa and Puniu rivers, about three km NW of Te Kawa and 8 km five mi SW of Te Awamutu in the Waikato vicinity of New Zealand's North Island. Kakepuku became named by Rakataura, a Tainui tohunga. One model says it became in memory of the shape of his pregnant wife, Kahurere. In Maori legend, Kakepuku travelled north looking for his father, until he reached the Waipa simple and fell in love with Te Kawa, daughter of Pirongia and Taupiri Mountains.
However, he had a rival in Karewa, who also stood nearby. The mountains fought, Karewa lost and, pursued with the aid of Kakepuku's rocks, fled into the Tasman Sea, now also known as Gannet Island. So Kakepuku stays guarding Te Kawa. Kakepuku Mountain Conservation Project covers 198 ha inclusive of Kakepuku Mountain Historic Reserve administered with the aid of DOC, adjacent Waipa District Council reserve and personal land. The mission turned into set up in 1995 out of subject for the health of native bush on Kakepuku Maunga.
