Walcheren
About Walcheren
Walcheren is a region and former island inside the Dutch province of Zeeland on the mouth of the Scheldt estuary. It lies among the Eastern Scheldt inside the north and the Western Scheldt within the south and is roughly the shape of a rhombus. The two facets going through the North Sea encompass dunes; the rest of its coastline is made of dykes. Middelburg lies at its centre; this city is the provincial capital and Vlissingen 9 kilometres 5.6 mi to the south is the main harbour.
The third municipality is Veere. Originally, Walcheren changed into an island, however polders and a dam throughout the Eastern Scheldt have connected it to the former island of Zuid-Beveland, which in turn has been linked to the North Brabant mainland. As early as Roman instances, the island functioned as a factor of departure for ships going to Britain; it had a temple of the goddess Nehalennia who became popular with folks who braved the waters of the North Sea. The Romans known as it "Wallacra", a time period most possibly related to Walhaz, the name Germans used for Romans.
