About Vuurtoreneiland
Vuurtoreneiland is a small island in the IJmeer, Netherlands, simply off the coast of Durgerdam. The island's principal function is as a base for a lighthouse; a navy fortress at the island was abandoned within the Thirties. The island's lighthouse has been in operation on account that 1700; it is named for the opposite factor on the mainland, Hoek van 't IJ, or Corner of the IJ.
The first lighthouse become a rectangular, stone building. In 1809, the island turned into geared up with a navy put up, which, in 1844, became improved to a real citadel, which, in 1883, became a part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. The lighthouse became replaced with a cast iron creation in 1893, which continues to be status. At the cease of the 19th century, a bomb proof constructing and artillery battery have been built on the island, but its 5 weapons had been moved to Den Helder in 1904. In 1959, it become delisted as a stronghold, but the ultimate infantrymen had left long before.
