About Valkenburg Castle Ruins

Valkenburg Castle is a ruined fort in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands. It is unique in the Netherlands by being the handiest fort within the country. Built on a Hill. The fortress is listed in the top hundred of Dutch cultural monuments. In the 12 months 1115, fortifications were erected at the website online by means of Gosewijn I, Lord of Valkenburg. This original timber hold survived until 1122 whilst it became destroyed underneath siege via Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor. The fort became rebuilt inside the following centuries but became once more destroyed in a siege, this time through John III, Duke of Brabant. The modern-day ruins are the ones of the citadel rebuilt in the 14th century.

The fort suffered heavily in the Dutch Spanish conflict because it wasn't constructed to resist the brand new heavy obligation cannons and mortars. The Spanish armies seriously crippled the defensive walls of Valkenburg and left the castle in a miles kingdom of disrepair with its superb towers now collapsed and its roofs burned to ashes. The Dutch armies attempted to repair the castle however had been unsuccessful because of the continued wars with the Spaniards and the French. The fortress become slighted during the Franco-Dutch War, in 1672, through the military of King-Stadtholder Willem III to save you it falling into French palms.
