About Rechteren Castle
Rechteren Castle is a Dutch castle situated on an island on side-branch of Overijsselse Vecht river, close to the village of Dalfsen. It is the only citadel in the province Overijssel from the Middle Ages that also exists. Originally, Rechteren Castle changed into owned by the counts of Bentheim. It is first referred to in 1190. In 1315, it became the assets of Herman van Voorst. Through inheritances, it became assets of the van Heeckeren that split into the van Voorst en van Rechteren family. The counts of Rechteren inherited the fortress, and it's far in recent times nevertheless the circle of relatives's belongings.
The citadel is not open to site visitors. During the Second World War the citadel supplied shelter to a few 60 refugees from Katwijk, Noordwijk and Scheveningen. In 1908 and 1991, the proprietors of the fort allowed a photographer to take pictures of the indoors. The vestibule consists of many family images, and there's a white salon designed in rococo fashion. The dinner room is decorated with art work by means of Herman ten Oever, depicting scenes from Greek mythology. The principal hall consists of photos and hands of the Rechteren own family.
