About Paard van Marken
The Paard van Marken is the lighthouse of Marken. The contemporary lighthouse was designed by using J. Valk and built in 1839 and stands at the eastern tip of the island. The tower has a mild peak of 16 meters and a light range of 16.7 km. The tower started out in 1700 as a square lighthouse. This become certainly one of 3 lighthouses at Marken, De Ven and Durgerdam, which changed into decided in 1699 to mark the direction from the Wadden Sea to Amsterdam.
The towers were prepared with oil lamps according to the layout of Jan van der Heyden. In 1839 the rectangular stone tower become replaced through a round iron one at the vintage foundation. Later a brick constructing with a dwelling and storage region become built on the lighthouse, which gave the tower its feature form. In 1814 the tower acquired a fog bell. In 1919 the fog bell was replaced by a fog horn. The lighthouse frequently suffers from melting ice. In 1971 this was so bad that the tower became pushed a few centimeters from its region. Currently The lighthouse is inhabited. Since 1970 the tower has the repute of countrywide monument.
