The hermitage at Schaelsberg is a huge hermitage in Schin op Geul, within the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands. Build in 1688 for the lords of nearby castle Schaloen, the chapel and connected dwelling area, housed a succession of sixteen hermits from its foundation until 1930. The chapel and close by stations of the pass, introduced in 1843, are a countrywide monument. Since 1758 a each 12 months procession, the Sjaasbergergank, is held to the hermitage, and this procession is indexed as countrywide intangible cultural background.
Located in a tourist region of South Limburg, it's far a famous tourist attraction. The hermitage is placed on top of the Schaesberg hill, on the brink of the Schaelsbergerforest. It is a rectangular chapel, with a small dwelling space linked, all produced from white painted marl. The chapel has a crow-stepped gable and flèche, with on the north side a choir and apse, and at the south facet a nave. Attached is a small residing area, together with rooms, with an higher floor and a basement. The lowest of these rooms dates from the 15th century and became at first a searching residence of fortress Schaloen.
