About Haarlemmermeer
Haarlemmermeer is a Dutch polder and municipality of the same name inside the south of the Dutch province of Noord-Holland. In the centuries earlier than the reclamation 1849 to 1852 the Haarlemmermeer was an vast water surface. The Haarlemmermeer is surrounded through a ring canal. Schiphol Airport is placed within the northeast of the municipality. The municipality has 154,223 population. The biggest metropolis, Hoofddorp, has round 75,000 inhabitants.
In the Middle Ages, across the 13th century, there had been at the least 3 peat lakes between the towns of Amsterdam, Haarlem and Leiden, specifically: the Spieringmeer in the north, the Haarlemmermeer within the center and the Leidsemeer in the south. For elements of these lakes, names consisting of Hellemeer and Oude Meer existed regionally, however those have been elements of the aforementioned lakes. Through the years, peatland particularly via humans from Haarlem for the fuel supply of the growing towns and their activities and as a result of wave erosion due to negative or lacking dikes disappeared, specifically at the northern and east banks.
