About Fort Pannerden
Fort Pannerden is a disused military fortress located close to the village of Pannerden in the southeast of the Netherlands. In November 2006, it have become the focal point of national news memories due to the fact a group of squatters have been evicted in a large-scale operation through police, helped by using the army. Later on inside the same month, it changed into resquatted. The fort turned into constructed between 1869 and 1871 to serve as a part of the New Dutch Waterline. Originally built completely out of brick and mortar, with just one principal battery guarding the Rhine, it become upgraded extensively throughout 1885 to 1895.
The fundamental battery was absolutely rebuilt, with armour and concrete, while two extra armoured batteries had been introduced and the roof of the fort was strengthened with concrete. The fort had strategic importance in that it guarded the Pannerden Canal, which furnished the water for the inundations of the New Dutch Waterline and will probably be used as a route towards the primary line of defence, but the fortress saw little energetic provider. In World War I the Netherlands remained neutral, even though the castle become manned as a part of a fashionable mobilisation.
