Artis

Artis is the zoo of Amsterdam and the oldest zoo within the Netherlands. Artis is placed in the Plantage neighborhood. The front is at Plantage Kerklaan. Artis, formally the Royal Zoological Society Natura Artis Magistra nature is the teacher of artwork become founded in 1838 by means of G.F. Westerman, J.W.H. Werlemann and J.J. Wijsmuller hooked up. Artis has set itself the purpose of stimulating love and care for nature. The park has around 27 enormous buildings that largely date from the 19th century. Artis has renewed a lot in recent years.

Artis become founded on May 1, 1838 as Zoological Society Natura Artis Magistra at the initiative of bookseller Gerardus Frederik Westerman, together with commissioner Johann Wilhelm Heinrich Werlemann and watchmaker Jan Jacob Wijsmuller. The purpose become to bring nature in the direction of the citizens in each residing and non living shape. They offered a website in the Plantage, the then green suburb of Amsterdam, and had homes erected there and set up a garden. The name become soon simplified to Artis. On May 1, 1852, the society acquired the designation Royal.
