It become created in 1355 and is the handiest remaining town gate from the defenses of Haarlem. Until the seventeenth century it become the town gate used for traffic with the aid of land eastwards in the direction of Spaarnwoude over the Laeghe weg.
In 1631 the Haarlemmertrekvaart became dug, which shortened the waterway from Haarlem to Amsterdam substantially. Until that time, boats certain for Amsterdam did not pass here, however traveled up the Spaarne river to skip the small sluice gate at Spaarndam, so one can reach the IJ. Coaches traveling through land to Amsterdam did leave this gate over the Oude Weg to the Liede, in which they could pass at Penningsveer a ferry for a penny to Spaarnwoude and from there, journey onwards alongside the antique IJdijk to Amsterdam. This gate, for those visiting with the aid of land, become called the Spaarnwouderpoort.
