About Airborne Museum Hartenstein
The Airborne Museum Hartenstein in Oosterbeek, The Netherlands is devoted to the Battle of Arnhem wherein the Allied Forces attempted to form a bridgehead at the northern banks of the Rhine river in September 1944. Hartenstein served as the headquarters of the British 1st Airborne Division. In the museum an extensive and numerous series is displayed including unique weaponry, actual uniforms and equipment used inside the war. The severa snap shots and movies on display offer a realistic image that is stronger by means of interviews with Allied soldiers.
In addition the museum has an award-prevailing Airborne Experience exhibition, that depicts the area around Arnhem and Oosterbeek throughout the warfare. The museum also affords German and civilian views. Historical records from 1728 imply that an inn called ‘Het Rode Hert’ The Red Deer stood on the important crossroad of the 'Utrechtseweg' in Oosterbeek. In 1779 the hotel and the encompassing land become received through a rich lawyer to the Court of Gelderland named J. Van der Sluys. The lodge became demolished and in its vicinity a mansion turned into built entire with adjacent annexes. The new mansion became named Hartenstein.
