About Syriam
Syriam, city and port, southwestern Myanmar. It is situated at the Yangon River, a tributary of the Irrawaddy River, contrary Yangon. Formerly part of the Mon country, Syriam eventually became a port of the Portuguese and French. In 1756 Alaungpaya, the Myanmar king, conquered the Mon and their French allies, whom he positioned into slavery; the city changed into destroyed in those movements and had little significance till the 20 th century, whilst the British commenced drilling for oil inside the Irrawaddy basin close to Chauk and sent the oil to Syriam for refining.
