About Shwedagon Pagoda: Yangon

Commonly referred to as 'The Golden Pagoda', Shwedagon Pagoda is arguably the most visited attraction in Myanmar. The stupa reaching a height of 98 meter, is covered with golden plates that weigh nearly 52 metric tonnes. The umbrella at the top of the pagoda has nearly 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 rubies, and the tip is crowned with a 76 carat diamond. It is believed that the construction of Shwedagon Pagoda was carried out between 6th century and 10th century. It is today the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage destination for Myanmar people as it houses the relics of past four Buddhas which are staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Konagamana, a piece of the robe of Kassapa and eight hairs of Gautama. Shwedagon Pagoda is situated in the center of Yangon City.
