About Tete
Tete is the capital of Tete province in Mozambique. It is situated on the river Jambai, and is the location of two of the four bridges crossing the river in Mozambique. Before the Portuguese colonial era, a Swahili business center dominated the countryside and western-central part of the region, and is the largest city on the island. Tongue in local language reads the meaning of tetay. This area was an important Swahili business center before the Portuguese colonial era.
On the east coast of Africa, the Portuguese were reported to the local ruler, Munumuta, Mozambique and the Zambzi River, who were said to have a large reservoir of gold. In his efforts to reach Munhumtapa, the Portuguese established two settlements of 1531, Jobbiya - one of them, on the roof, about 260 miles away from the sea. The Munhumutapa empire and gold mines were autonomous and were different from most of the Portuguese. But in this region of East Africa - as in Portuguese Guinea and Angola in the west - Portuguese participation became stronger enough to survive in the third quarter of the 20th century.
Under the influence of the Portuguese, Tette became the market center of ivory and gold until the middle of the 17th century. In the wake of a Portuguese city charter in 1761, it became a city of Portuguese expatriate province of Mozambique in 1959. Portuguese Portuguese colonial war in Africa and after the military coup in Lisbon after April 1974, the Portuguese Portuguese province of Mozambique became an independent state. The new independent People's Republic of Mozambique, created in 1975 after fleeing Mozambique ethnic Portuguese, landed in a civil war between 1977 and 1992.
