About National Ceramics Museum
The National Ceramics Museum is housed in the Kechla citadel, which was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The building itself is an interesting treat, not only does it offer spectacular views of the roofs of the Medina all the way to the cold blue water of the Atlantic, but there are many interesting design elements in it. It also has a great historical value. Of course, the most interesting aspect of the building is not a building or scene, but rather ceramic gems that are kept inside it.
Kechla is home to some of the finest pieces of pottery in the country. Every item kept here has been carefully crafted with the hand and hand of the skilled craftsman. Such exquisite work has been the pride of the inhabitants of Safi for years. Each ceramic masterpiece provides a world of self expression and is full of meaningful designs, styles and colors. The pieces are trimmed with a silver overlay, which gives the design a variety of richness and enhances its specificity.
The techniques used to make these beautiful designs include engraving, stamping, molding and sculping, and a skilled craftsman may have used a subtle difference in color and relief to decorate his artifacts. The exhibition in the National Pottery Museum is an excellent example of this artwork. Of course, not for sale - especially many of them are very old. If you are encouraged to buy the last conversation piece for your home after seeing them, then you can visit the Quarter Quarter in the Safi Museum where many modern artists continue to practice this era-old business.
