About Zinacantepec
Zinacantepec is a town and municipality placed just west of the city of Toluca in Mexico State, Mexico. The community is known as after a small mountain which contained two caves which was filled with heaps of bats. Zinacantepec is Nahuatl for Bat Mountain. Its Aztec glyph is a bat on a mountain. In the 18th century, the population of this mountain moved to settle along the Franciscan monastery set up right here inside the sixteenth century. This monastery is the first-class preserved of a community of missionaries installed inside the Toluca Valley inside the mid 16th century.
Today, the complex features because the parish church, with the cloister devoted as the colonial era museum of the nation of Mexico. The history of the metropolis and municipality starts approximately 1500 years ago at an elevation now named Cerro de Murcielago or Bat Mountain. The hill contained caves that were once full of lots of bats. The presence of these animals becomes considered a signal of fertility. The hill remained populated until the 18th century, when a pandemic driven the populace towards the Franciscan monastery, which functioned as a sanatorium.
