About Yanga
Yanga Municipality is a region situated in the southern territory of the State of Veracruz, Mexico, around 80 km from the state capital of Xalapa. It was previously known as San Lorenzo de los Negros after a state of cimarrons in the mid 17th century or San Lorenzo de Cerralvo following a 17th century Spanish pioneer minister. In 1932 it was renamed after Gaspar Yanga, the cimarron head who in 1609 opposed assault by Spanish powers endeavoring to recapture control of the region.
Gaspar Yanga was a head of the Yang-Bara clan in the zone of present-day Guinea in West Africa before being sold into bondage and sent to Mexico. In the wake of driving a getaway by a band of slaves in 1570, Yanga and his gathering settled in the good countries. They fended off Spanish powers in 1609, and had a progression of wicked skirmishers over about 10 years. It wound up known as San Lorenzo de los Negros named after the cimmarons or San Lorenzo de Cerralvo named after Juan Laurencio, a Jesuit minister who had went with the 1609 endeavor sent by the Viceroy. They gave the town of San Lorenzo its "little freedom".
