About Teotitlan del Valle
Teotitlan den Valle is a small village and municipality located within the Tlacolula District in the east of the Valles Centrales Region, 31 km from the city of Oaxaca inside the foothills of the Sierra Juarez Mountains. It is a part of the Tlacolula Valley district. It is known for its textiles, in particular rugs, which might be woven on hand-operated looms, from wool acquired from local sheep and dyed mainly with local, natural dyes. They integrate historic Zapotec designs with modern-day designs consisting of reproductions of famous artists' work. Artists take commissions and take part in excursions of circle of relatives-owned workshops.
The name Teotitlan comes from Nahuatl and manner land of the gods. Its Zapotec call is Xaguixe, because of this on the foot of the mountain. Established in 1465, it was one of the first villages based via Zapotec peoples on this location and keeps its Zapotec lifestyle and language. This village is considered to be one of the first that become based by way of the Zapotecs round 1465. It changed into at the start named Xaquija, because of this celestial constellation.
