Santa Catarina is a city in Santa Catarina Municipality in the territory of Nuevo Leon, Mexico that is a piece of the Monterrey Metropolitan region. Santa Catarina is situated around 15 kilometers southwest of focal Monterrey. As of the Mexican registration of 2005, its population was 259,202 in the city and 259,896 in the region. The city and region both position 6th in population in the state.
The name of this city originates from the Catholic Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The city of Santa Catarina was not "established" in a customary way; toward the starting, it was just a resting point for voyagers among Monterrey and Saltillo. The main recorded name was "Estancia de Santa Catarina" Shelter of Santa Catarina. During the French Invasion of Mexico in the second half of the 19th century, the president Benito Juarez put in some days in Santa Catarina while heading out to Monterrey, and it was amid this time he raised its status to Village. The classification of Village was kept up until 1979 when the state government raised its status to City.
