Amatan

Amatan is a Mexican municipality positioned north of the nation of Chiapas. Its head is the small homonymous metropolis of Amatan that is located at an altitude of 800 masl. Its limits are: to the north and east with the State of Tabasco, to the south with the municipality of Huitiupan, to the west with Solosuchiapa and Ixtapangajoya. Its climate is warm humid with rain all yr round. The name Amatan means in Nahuatl as opposed to amates. Before the Spanish conquest the present territory of the Municipality belonged to the nation Zoque.

The colonial city was created as a result of the cedula issued on July 10 by means of the Spanish crown, by means of which it was ordered to acquire the special ethnic groups in villages, on the way to be able to Castilianize and evangelize, a disposition that turned into till 1549. In 1708, Amatan seems as a tributary city of the real hazienda and caxa of the metropolis of Santhiago de Goathemala.
