About National Museum of Archaeology

The National Museum of Archeology is a Maltese gallery of ancient antiques, situated in Valletta. It is overseen by Heritage Malta. The Auberge de Provence was opened as the National Museum in 1958 by Agatha Barbara, at that point the Minister of Education. The gallery initially incorporated the archeological gathering on the ground floor and expressive arts on the primary floor. The principal caretaker was Captain Charles G. Zammit, the child of the famous Maltese paleontologist Sir Themistocles Zammit.

In 1974, the expressive arts gathering was moved to the National Museum of Fine Arts, recently settled in the Admiralty House working in South Street, Valletta, and the National Museum was renamed the National Museum for Archaeology. The historical center was revamped and overhauled in 1998. Antiquities were set in atmosphere controlled shows so the presentation met with current preservation standards. The Auberge de Provence is an extravagant working in Republic Street, Valletta, worked for the Order of Saint John in 1571. It was composed by the Maltese engineer Girolamo Cassar, who coordinated the working of most imperative structures in the beginning of Valletta.

The building's facade is engraved with Mannerist qualities as a rule related with Cassar. The Grand Salon on the principal floor is the most lavish room in the building. The Knights utilized it for business exchanges, and as a refectory and banqueting lobby, where they sat at long tables as indicated by position. At the point when Napoleon removed the Knights from Malta in 1798 the Auberge was rented to the Malta Union Club. In spite of the fact that the rent was to terminate in 2002, on 12 August 1955 the Auberge was relegated to house Malta's National Museum.
