About St. Michael Church
St. Michael’s Church is a Roman Catholic church in Donggongon, a town inside the district of Penampang within the Malaysian state of Sabah. It is the oldest church inside the district of Penampang and the second one oldest stone church in Sabah, after St. Michael’s and All Angels Church in Sandakan. According to oral tradition, the Missionaries had been oppressed through the local territorial spirits. They could then say the rosary and make contact with upon the Archangel Michael to guard and shield them.
It turned into then that the clergymen determined to name the church as St. Michael’s Church due to the fact the church turned into under the safety of St. Michael. The history of the church started out with the Mill Hill Missionaries who got here to Penampang in 1886. The missionaries, led by using Fr. Alexander Prenger, set up a base in Kampung Inobong in which a church now known as Sacred Heart Church currently stand.
The missionaries then decided to establish a brand new base at Kg. Dabak, Penampang, that's closer to the ocean, a river known as Moyog river and located in a simple with rice fields with a low hill this is strategically positioned and ideal for the building of a church. This vicinity is alternatively strategic because the locals who used the river as a method of transportation could alight at Kasigui which become then the best and first town inside the District of Penampang from the coast en path to the interior.
