Penang Botanic Gardens
About Penang Botanic Gardens
The Penang Botanic Gardens, also known as the "Cascade Gardens" on account of the falling cascade nearby, is an open stop arranged on Jalan Air Terjun in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The first gardens were set up in 1884 from an old quarry site, under the supervision of Charles Curtis, who was the primary director. George Town was built up on Penang Island in August 1786; the settlement empowered the East India Company to build up a vital base to test the Dutch zest exchange and oceanic matchless quality in the Straits of Malacca. In 1794, the Company named Christopher Smith as botanist to Penang to build up the flavor cultivates on Penang Island. Smith, who had initially prepared at Kew Gardens, planted a little garden of "20 orlongs" in 1794 in the center Ayer Itam valley and a bigger garden, of "300 orlongs", at Sungai Keluang.
The correct area of the two patio nurseries is indistinct. In 1796, Smith was sent to the Moluccas, to fill in as director of their botanic patio nurseries and to gather examples of nutmeg and clove for planting in the Penang Gardens. By 1800 there were approximately 1,300 plants in the two Penang gardens, with Sungai Keluang currently overwhelmingly developing pepper plants. That year, a conveyance of a further 15,000 clove and 1,500 nutmeg trees together with canary nuts and sugar palms touched base from Ambon Island.
