Kampung Kuantan Fireflies

Kuala Selangor is a small coastal village located at the northwest of Kuala Lumpur. The village is well-known for the amazing Selangor River that runs through the village. So, a trip to Kuala Selangor is incomplete without witnessing the uniqueness and the wonders of the Kuantan Village Fireflies found in small villages and in the midst of oil palm trees. Basically, these fireflies are seen on the Selangor River during the evenings / nights. Most of these fireflies are found in a special mangrove tree species called berembang. This region is known to be one of the biggest firefly colonies in the world. If you want to explore the fireflies yourself, the best time to move towards Kampung Kuantan is in the late afternoon. You just have to arrange an eco-friendly rowing boat and one of the local boatmen guide will escort you. Its better to avoid the tour in the rainy season.
About the fireflies
Fireflies or 'Lightning Bugs' are mainly found in bushy areas and they shine dazzlingly in the night to magnetize a partner. Often their blinking seems to be rhythmic and synchronized and it creates an overall effect that looks like twinkling lights of a Christmas tree. If you go for a night walk along the Selangor River banks, you feel mesmerized.
Daily firefly tour
There are privately run firefly tours in Bukit Belimbing, which are operated by the Fireflies Park Resort. People can enjoy the tour every night. Generally the tours start around 7pm. But, no one is allowed for photography as it can disturb the fireflies. It takes only a 40 minute drive from Kuala Lumpur city center to reach the spot.

There are some rental cars and taxis available from Kuala Lumpur. It is just a 40 minute drive over the KL - Kuala Selangor Expressway from Kuala Lumpur. One can also get into the bus from Puduraya bus station.
