Madaba Map

The Madaba Map, additionally called the Madaba Mosaic Map, is part of a ground mosaic inside the early Byzantine church of Saint George in Madaba, Jordan. The Madaba Map is of the Middle East, and a part of it contains the oldest surviving authentic cartographic depiction of the Holy Land and specially Jerusalem. It dates to the 6th century AD. The Madaba Mosaic Map depicts Jerusalem with the New Church of the Theotokos, which turned into committed on November 20, 542.

Buildings erected in Jerusalem after 570 are absent from the depiction, thus restricting the date range of its introduction to the duration among 542 and 570. The mosaic changed into made by unknown artists, probably for the Christian network of Madaba, which was the seat of a bishop at that time. In 614, Madaba changed into conquered by the Sasanian Empire. In the 8th century, the ruling Muslim Umayyad Caliphate had a few figural motifs eliminated from the mosaic. In 746, Madaba was largely destroyed via an earthquake and sooner or later deserted.
