About Wakasahiko Shrine
This shrine enshrines Wakasahikogami, the deity of Wakasahiko, that is said to have appeared in the Nara Period as a tentative figure in Shiraishi in Shimonegori district where the ritual of Omizu okuri has been performed.
He is depicted as a foreign settler in the pictorial genealogy stored in this shrine.
Negorizaka area which leads to Nara has a lot of legends about the appearance of ancient deities as tentative figures.
These legends seem to suggest that the deity of Wakasahiko is related to the religious and cultural interaction between the Asian continent and Nara.
The deity of this shrine is called Hikohohodemi no Mikoto that is worshipped as Wakasa Ichinomiya.
The main hall and the Zuishin Gate constructed in the Edo Period are designated as cultural properties by Fukui Prefecture.
